Death Cafe's have been around since 2011 all over the world. The Death Cafe is a non-profit organization that helps to "increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives" (Deathcafe.com).
The idea is that a host offers a space, some drinks and cake, so that people can comfortably sit around together to discuss whatever aspects of death may come up. It is not a grieving session; it is an agenda-free organic discussion. One of the reasons I decided to host my own meetings is due to my yoga practice, in a way. Patanjali, Father of Yoga, talks about abinivesha, the fear of death. He even points out in the Yoga Sutra that this one fear leads to all others. When we recognize everything is temporary and release our attachments, we no longer hang on to and suffer from that fear. I would love for people to become more comfortable speaking about death and, since becoming an End-of-Life Doula, recognize the importance in having these discussions.
My next Death Cafe meetings are the second Monday of each month from 6-7:30pm CST. Email me for the link and password. Typically, I post my meetings on my other website, www.inspiredbyearth.com and plan to offer them quarterly. You can also go to www.deathcafe.com and look for the Death Cafe meeting called Western Chicago suburbs. All meetings are on Zoom. ALL are welcome:)
